20th Chingawassa a hit, headliner Vassar 'a really cool guy'

Staff writer

Balmy weather made it easy for hundreds to turn out for the 20th Chingawassa Days this weekend.

Parks and recreation director Margo Yates said she had heard many compliments about headliner Phil Vassar’s performance.

He arrived early for his Saturday night concert and took in some of the sights of Marion, Yates said.

“Phil Vassar was a really cool guy,” she said. “He walked downtown and around. He went across the street to have ice cream at the alpaca shop. I’m sure it’s nice for him to walk around and just be a regular guy. I’ve had a lot of comments on his concert. A lot of people said he was the best ever. That’s a good compliment. You can’t beat that.”

Committee member Brent Cleeton said he also had heard praise for Vassar.

Cleeton was in charge of arrangements for food vendors and spent Thursday morning to Sunday afternoon at the park.

“It seemed very crowded,” he said. “I thought the park filled up nicely.”
