20 teams to compete in softball tourney

Twenty traveling teams from across Kansas will participate in a fast-pitch softball tournament for girls 12 and younger Saturday at Hillsboro.

Additional games will be played at Canton-Galva. In the past, they often were scheduled for Marion. However, tournament sponsor Doug Sisk, who also is Hillsboro’s recreation director, said Marion’s sports complex was not available this year.

High school commencement, the possibility of rainouts from a tournament that just concluded, the need to switch concessions from school to recreation commission groups, and a change in the way gate receipts were apportioned were among the reasons why.

None of the teams are local, but one of the traveling teams, Emporia Energy, includes some Marion County players, Sisk said.

Games will begin at 8 a.m. and run until 10 p.m. Admission will cost $5 for adults and $3 for school-age children.

Concessions will be available.
