We understand that diphtheria and scarlet fever have both been quite prevalent and fatal recently in the western part of the county.

The impromptu Republican rally last Monday night was a creditable demonstration. The torch-light procession gotten up on the spur of the moment, headed by the band, was a good beginning. It was the first thing of the kind ever seen in Marion Centre. Rogers Hall was crowded with an enthusiastic audience.

Died, on Saturday, the 9th inst., of typhoid fever, Bessie, second daughter of Thomas and Kittie Buford, in the 13th year of her age. Thus had Death’s untimely frost nipped in the very bud one of the fairest and loveliest flowers of earth, and thus passed away from our midst in the morning of life, one of the brightest and sweetest children the world ever knew.

When not in his office or absent on professional business, Dr. Waring can be found, hereafter, at his new residence, just north of the Presbyterian Church.

Rugg & Co., the enterprising proprietors of the Steam Sugar and Sorghum Factory, have purchased improved machinery and fitted themselves for making hominy. This is an important new enterprise. We can not have too many manufactories.

To-day the Democrats have their grand rally. Their candidate for Governor, ex-Senator E.G. Ross and others will address the people. The brethren come together under rather depressin’ circumstances.
