Confederate Memorial Day, April 26, was generally observed throughout the South with more or less ceremony. At Macon, Georgia, the Confederate monument cornerstone was laid by the Grand Masonic Lodge of Georgia. A letter from Jefferson Davis was read, and an oration delivered by Col. Colquitt.

J.W. Whitney of Risley had a narrow escape, last Sunday night, from a rattle-snake. As he was picking up some corn in the dark, the snake struck him on the coat sleeve. He got a light and killed it. The snake measured two feet and a half in length, and had five rattles and a button.

The fruit prospects are very flattering. “Peaches and cream” will be too common to be considered a luxury. Besides the goodly promise of tame fruit, there is a fine prospect for wild fruits. Wild plums especially will be unusually abundant, if nothing happens.

The City Fathers of Marion Centre met and organized last Saturday evening. The following officers and committees were appointed: Clerk and Attorney, R.M. Crane; Treasurer, Geo. M. Knox; Marshal, J.H. McAllister; Assistant Marshal, J.N. Widmeyer; Committee on Finance and Claims, J.M. Corbett, M.H. Stone and John Christie; Committee on Ordinances, Geo. M. Knox, E.W. Hoch and Jno. Christie.
