Downes and Bower have been making their popular store shine with various and sundry improvements this week.

Major Bown’s little boy Morton fell out of a tree Wednesday and broke his arm at the elbow.

Mrs. Smith’s show window presents a novel and beautiful appearance. It is composed of a gorgeous array of imitation flowers. They are so natural that one can scarcely believe they are not genuine.

Lawyer J.T. McDuffie sweetened the editor Monday with some genuine maple syrup which he had received from a friend in Vermont.

The commissioners have wisely decided to erect a new jail instead of reserving room in the old courthouse now being remodeled. Commissioner Osborne, Sheriff Davis and contractor Kable visited the Newton and Wichita jails in quest of pointers, and got them at the latter place, particularly, in abundance. It is proposed to erect the building on the east side of the courthouse grounds. This, in connection with the remodeled courthouse, will fix the county comfortably with necessary building.

The city schools will close for the summer next week. Supt. DeLay and his able corps of assistants have earned a rest. They have given Marion the best schools it ever had and are richly entitled to the plaudit “well done.” And the students, likewise deserve a summer’s outing.
