Winners of the Halloween costume contest at the annual trick-or-treat on Marion’s Main Street were Little Scarecrow, Gabriella Schlehuber, pre-kindergarten; Pippi Longstocking, Shyla Harris, kindergarten to second grade; and Aaron Molleker, grades three to six.

This week Ambassadors of Marion Chamber of Commerce presented first dollar of profit certificates to Brenda’s Bloomers and Gifts at 139 E. Main, Movement Connections at 404 E. Main, and Zimmerman’s Deli and Coffee Shop at 125 E. Main.

Tyshia Penwell took first in the 14- to 15-year-old girls group at the sectional punt, pass, and kick event in Wellington. Grif Case finished second in the eight-to-nine-year-old group.

A feature story in this issue has a picture of Tampa Rural High School built in 1930 and of a memorial erected by alumni at its site. Dedicated in 2004, it is the one remaining visible link to the school.

Danielle Cope is the Marion County Record’s Athlete of the Week. The MHS junior wrapped up a stellar season at the 3A state meet at Wamego. Her time of 13:39 in the two-mile race was better than 65 runners.

Marion-Florence USD 408 business manager, Martin Tice, who worked 30 years in education, 26 years for USD 408, was honored Sunday at a retirement party.
